61. As time goes by

It was Krishna Shah, best known as the director of the film Shalimar starring Dharmendra and Zeenat Aman, who first mentioned Casablanca, the American movie, while teaching us Screenplay Writing.

He taught us that a film story comprises 12 elements. Most storytellers can only include 3 to 4 of these. However, aside from Casablanca, no other film has managed to incorporate all 12 elements.

So, Casablanca is not just one film; rather, it is many films, an anthology. It is a significant and bold statement.

Produced by Warner Bros. and directed by Michael Curtiz, Casablanca was released on January 23, 1943, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

The script was based on the unproduced play "Everybody Comes to Rick's,' written by Murray Burnett and Joan Alison. Casablanca was ranked as the #3 Greatest Movie of All Time in 2007 by the American Film Institute.

I've written a 3,500-word article about the movie, but here I’m only sharing its famous song 'As Time Goes By.'

Its German version, also with the same tune, it is equally good. Those immortal lines, "Here's lookin' at you, kid," became "Ich seh' Dir in die Augen, Kleines," which translates as "I look in your eyes, honey."

It’s a fantastic scene when Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) says, "Play it, Sam. Play As Time Goes By".

Enjoy the song –

You must remember this

A kiss is just a kiss; a sigh is just a sigh.

The fundamental things apply.

As time goes by.

And when two lovers woo

They still say, "I love you."

On that you can rely.

No matter what the future brings

As time goes by.

Moonlight and love songs

Never out of date.

Hearts full of passion

Jealousy and hate.

Woman needs man

And man must have his mate

That no one can deny.

It's still the same old story

A fight for love and glory

A case of do or die.

The world will always welcome lovers

As time goes by.

Oh yes, the world will always welcome lovers

As time goes by.
