63. Where did I find a lonely heart?
It is commonly believed that Hem Sundari Tagore, a distant relative of Rabindranath Tagore, came to Meerut after she became a widow.
The lineage is as follows: Hem Sundari Tagore was married to Jadu Nandan Tagore, who was the great-grandson of Darpanarayan Tagore and a distant cousin of Rabindranath Tagore.
In Meerut, Hem Sundari joined a hospital as a nurse and married journalist and poet Pyare Lal Shakir Meeruti, who had converted to Christianity. Hem Sundari gave birth to two daughters. One was named Prabhavati.
Prabhavati was the mother of the legendary actress, the tragedy queen Meena Kumari. Her father’s name was Master Ali Baksh, and her mother's name was Iqbal Begum. (After her marriage, Prabhavati changed her name to Iqbal Begum).
Master Ali Baksh was a Parsi theatre veteran, and Iqbal Begum was a stage actor and dancer.
Meena Kumari was the first recipient of the Filmfare Best Actress Award for Baiju Bawra in 1954.
The following year, in 1955, she again received the same award for Parineeta.
In the tenth year of the Filmfare Awards, she was nominated for three Best Actress awards and won for her performance in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam.
If Meena Kumari inherited her acting talent from her mother, she also inherited a poetic legacy from her grandfather, poet Pyare Lal Shakir Meeruti, and she honored both of them with great reverence.
If you have any doubt, read the following lines penned by Meena Kumari -
(The moon feels lonely
and so does the sky'
Where did I find a lonely heart?
Hope has been lost; the star is gone.
The smoke shivers on its own.
Is this really what life is all about?
The body feels lonely, while the soul endures solitude.
Even if we manage to find a companion somewhere,
Both of them continue walking here alone.
Burning beyond the diminishing light
A solitary house, reduced in size,
When I embark on my final journey
The forlorn world will go on
waiting for me for centuries)
