71. poetry needed to address ordinary life
The Czech Republic’s leading modern poet, Miroslav Holub (1923-98), who was part of a group called ‘Poetry of Everyday' with other young Czech writers, writes: “Only by capturing life around us we may be able to express its dynamicism, and poetry needed to address ordinary life.”
If anything is certain, it is that women are not made of moon substance, that their eyes are not twin lotuses, and that their skin is not gold. So why do poets try to deceive us in these matters?
Even Bhartrihari accepted that poets are just fooling around. Knowing this, we are still tempted to read, listen to, and enjoy poetry.
Modern poetry is not just a record of the best thoughts; it should be.
It has evolved significantly and now addresses the problems and challenges of the modern age.
However, the style and rhythm of rhyme have undergone a complete transformation. This change is undoubtedly for the better, as the language has become more user-friendly.
Nevertheless, the readership is in rapid decline. Who is to blame? The poet, the reader, or the changed structural elements? I believe each has its own share of blame and reasons.
People criticize the poet because the quality of the poems has worsened, but they also refuse to accept new thoughts and feelings.
Another reason is that we don’t have those poets – someone who is a poet in the true sense, where life itself becomes poetry.
And we still have poetry, which enchants and takes us away to a different island.
