317. Helen Mirren expressed a sentiment shared by many
Actress Helen Mirren played Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in the 2023 biopic directed by Guy Nattiv. She has publicly expressed her support for Israel, notably co-signing a letter with Gene Simmons and Boy George that endorsed Israel’s participation in Eurovision.
Although she is not Jewish, many people view her as one because of her exceptional portrayal of Golda Meir and her interviews.
While at the Taormina Film Festival, she recounted an incident where, during a walk with her husband, filmmaker Taylor Hackford, in London, an unknown individual approached them, recorded their interaction, criticized her support for Israel, and then directed a series of insults at her.
Let's now read some of her interviews.
She said: “I grew up in Europe after the Second World War, and the realization among my parents’ generation of what had happened in the Holocaust was so profound and so important. Therefore, the creation of Israel was a very important moment, although maybe it was done in the completely wrong way, in the wrong place. I don’t know. But something had to happen after the horror.”
In another interview, she said: “I believe in Israel, in its existence, and I believe Israel has to move forward into the future, for the rest of eternity. I believe in Israel because of the Holocaust.”
In the two interviews above, what she said reflects the opinion of millions of people around the world.
Now read the third one. When asked about Israel’s assault on Gaza, she said: “How could you possibly repeat the actions done to you as people to other people? It’s called crimes against humanity.”
Her logic is the same as what I have been writing, including criticism of the current Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
She announced that she would have joined protests against current Netanyahu, saying: “My people are the people who are out demonstrating.”
Donald Trump, in a conversation with Netanyahu, rightly said that, “because of your actions, Israel is isolated and that People hate you.”
Yes, a majority of people around the world hate Netanyahu, even if they support Israel's existence.
