228. Some lives are valued more than others

When Donald Trump stated that his “own morality” was the sole constraint on his global authority, the concern went beyond his character. However, as the conflict with Iran began, Chancellor Merz questioned: “What are our options when international law explicitly hits its boundaries?”

Now it appears that there is no such thing as international law.

When Russia initiated its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it drew widespread condemnation from Europe. Yet, these nations have been much quieter since the US and Israel started their military operations against Iran. This deployment also constitutes an act of aggression.

Spain’s Pedro Sánchez continues to stand alone in his strong condemnation, even though Norway and other countries have also criticized the violation of international law. Meanwhile, Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, fully supported the action, while Germany’s Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, stated that “this is not the time to lecture our partners and allies.”

Like Ukraine, the initial misconduct in Iran has rapidly escalated, resulting in over a thousand civilian deaths, including at least 175 children in a girls’ school attack, with indications of US involvement.

These grave violations of wartime laws, whether reckless or intentional, are war crimes.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's statement that “no quarter will be given” to the enemy violates international humanitarian law.

Israel’s retaliatory attacks on Lebanon, intended to respond to Hezbollah’s actions in support of Iran, are at least disproportionately severe, according to EU foreign affairs chief Katja Kallas. These strikes have led to widespread displacement and significant infrastructure damage.

The disparity between the West’s claims of universal standards and its pick-and-choose outrage is becoming more evident globally.

When the Trump administration focused on suspected drug trafficking boats in the Caribbean and detained Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro, allies largely remained silent.

Observe the stark contrast between the strong support for Ukraine and the apparent neglect of Gaza's genocide.

It often seems some lives are valued more than others.
