9. The Reason of Your Poverty

Republic of South Sudan or the South Sudan is a small country in East Africa. Its capital is Juba, which happens to be its largest city. South Sudan became an independent state in 2011 becoming the 54th independent country in Africa.

After two years the country came in the grip of a civil war from 2015 until 2020. For five long years it was hotbed of ethnic massacres and human rights abuses. It was almost a hell for its estimated population of just over 12 million.

South Sudan has yet not recovered from the trauma. A systemic ethnic violence continues. The reason is as usual so many political factions trying to gain their hold.

Naturally people have suffered a lot. Some smart guys took advantage of the turmoil and became rich. But we cannot point fingers because no crook succeeds without political support.

Certainly not all the rich people can be termed bad.

Lawrence Lall is a South Sudanese billionaire. When the government started investigating his “source of income” he left for Canada with all his wealth.

He didn’t simply runaway. He confronted the authorities and said something which attracted attention of not only people from his country but the whole world.

He said: “Why didn’t the government investigate my “source of poverty when I used to sleep on the footpath of Juba city. I used to eat bread pieces by picking them from the garbage.”

And his logic is “the government which is not interested in knowing the reason of your poverty has no right to know the reason of your richness.”

What you think???
